Meet Middle School Coach Anna Petko!
Coach Anna Petko is an EGR local, high school graduate and the first from East to head to college on a scholarship to play field hockey! After her college years she returned to EGR to be near family and the EGRFH Board quickly drafted her to assist with the program. Anna is now the head coach for the very successful Middle School Field Hockey program which only continues to grow each year. Coach Anna may be small, but this pint-sized powerhouse of a Coach leads legions of Middle School athletes with her passion for everything field hockey! Growing the program from a handful of girls to over 50 her commitment and leadership is recognized by her players who work hard & play smart. She looks forward to a successful fall season in 2018 and encourages young ladies to sign up and try it – no experience required.
Why try field hockey in Middle School when there are so many other sports to choose from?
“Middle school is one of the few times in your life where you can still try something entirely new: learn to play saxophone, meet new friends, try a brand new sport that seems wierd at first and you know nothing about ! Once you wear “the skirt” though you’ll never go back! Field hockey demands speed, strength and a close bond with your teamworks to always be communicating and helping each other out. There is so much to learn on the field. Putting a stick in the hands of girls at this age is empowering; they learn so fast and we are thrilled to see the middle school program taking off. We also love how the JV and Varsity players are involved with the middle school program, helping at practices, inviting them to every game, learning their names, giving them rides and helping with homework. We never expected that our middle schooler would have any older mentor-girls in the high school but wow – that has been an incredibly positive thing for our daughter. She can’t wait to get to the high school now as a result of the field hockey team.”
EGR Field Hockey Dad Mike 2018
Coach Anna was instrumental in the success of the “Somewhere In Time” historical field hockey event in Fall 2017 which raised awareness of the sport of field hockey, generated great community involvement and helped grow the game for West Michigan. We are grateful to have her on the EGR Field Hockey Coaching Team!
